Aspects of the development of moroccan child’s awareness of bilingualism

This study seeks to explore the aspects of the awareness of children of bilingualism through an approach of their representations and judgements of the existence of this phenomenon and its advantages. The results obtained from an experiment on a sample of 96 Moroccan children aged between 4 and 11 from middle classes receiving both primary and fundamental education show: (1) an almost unified attitude of the subjects to the essence of bilingualism regardless of their age, (2) functioning within this bilingualism does not necessarily start at school and acquisition of a foreign language. It happens prior to that and takes the form of early activities and experiences the child comes to face at the stage of reflection and judgement, (3) early awareness of this bilingualism through experiences and activities that support it and highlight its advantages clearly points to the positive role of the latter in fostering this awareness. In turn this awareness contributes to the improvement and development of such activities and experiences, (4) the awareness of the bilingualism ranges between naïve and spontaneous admission among children of 4 to 7, unstable admission doomed to recess among those of 8 to 9 and an almost total acceptance of the phenomenon and its advantages among the older ones (10 to 11).
